  1. 1. I think that hale's method does work, because he does it enough to get people to believe him and gets people to talk and confess. It works.

    2. The truth has been written in Act 1. In Act 2 they all lied. Now Titiba is as good as dead. The whole witch idea is made up from alot of lies. Lifes wasted because of two stupid girls.

  2. 1.Hale is just a total fake like the girls cause there is no such thing as witchcraft.all he really did was look around and thats how he found a doll
2.they are much more sinister and more devastating to the people who are accused.well truth and lies is what this whole play is about.

  3. 1. My opinion: Hale's questions are not good enough to give him a good perspective about who's practicing witchcraft and who isn't. People prabably haven't memorized their 10 commandments. But that doesn't prove that they don't ever pray or ever try to be a good christian. Hale's methods are really simple and very easy to evade from. I believe that he just comes up with such easy questions because he doesnt want to find out which of his friends are guilty.

    2. Comparing Act 1 and 2, new lies, or rumors, are never ending. Different people have a new story to tell. According to Abigail, there's more than 1 truth. The truth that is revealed is only bringing more lies, like the girls dancing around the fire and john's affair with Abigail. That relationship is the answer to a few faults.

  5. 1. I think that the questions were really good because that way he can tell if they are lying or if they are telling the truth. His methods do work because then he gets enough information to find out the truth.

    2. Well in act 1 they dont lie at all until almost at the end of the act where they got caught dancing in the woods with tituba. In act 2 is where they just start saying things that the people want to hear. Well, to me the play's theme would be that people would lie so they wont get killed.

  7. 1. Nicholas Degregory is right about Helales idea to ask quiestions to confess the truth and to make people belive in hem.

    2. In Acte 1 it tells you wat rilly happend and when they get to act 2 the girls start lieing about everything. Then they start blaming people about the witchcraft for there own confessions to there lies.

  8. 1.my opinion on hales questions to proctor are really stupid and he is just accusing with out knowing wht hes asking. Hales methods are absurd they are completly irrelivent I think this because it is difficult to uncover the work of the devil with just asking questions
2.the truth is in act one but the girls keep changing up the story which makes the people look even more stupid. The truths and lies relate to the developement of the plays theme because people will keep dying because the the accusations

  9. 1) Hale's methods are ridiculous, because he already has he's suspicions and opinion about a the people he is questioning. He doesn't leave them alone until he hears what he already believes.

    2) the girls being to afriad of telling the truth is bad enough in act 1. but to lie and lie so others will pay for their mistakes in act 2 so horrific. tituba and the girls in my eyes are just as bad as witches.

  10. 2. during act 1 they didnt really lie about anything they just didnt tell the full story they did dance in the woods and they just left it at that wich 2 me is not lieing but act 2 they lied because they were just sceraming names 4 they want getin trouble

  11. 1.I think it works he asks them over and over until they say what he wants them to say.
2.Act one no one wants to talk there isnt much lieing. In act two the girls start to lie to save themselfs innocent people get accused.

  12. 1. I think hales mathods are very ineffective in uncovering the work of the devil. they dont seem valid to me. in the 16th century they may have been valid to most people since they believe in religion alot more than we do, but all they seem to have done is question them about religion. then the people pressure them into confessing to something that they didnt do. the only way to really make it stop and try and save your skin is by confessing and being "saved"
    2. the lies are never ending. each truth seems to just bring on more distrust and more lieing. the theme seems to be that people will lie to save themselfs from persecution

  13. 1) I think Hale's questions to the Proctor's are stupid. Just because someone isn't at church every Sunday doesn't mean they are at home worshiping the devil. I don't think his methods of uncovering the devil are valid. They look for the dumbest things, like the needle in the puppet. Hale is dumb for not realizing that the needle could have easily been placed in the doll by someone besides Elizabeth.

  14. 1. I think his questions were very biased. During his questioning he was practically accusing the proctors with the wording of his questions. The way that he asked questions and the questions he asked seemed like he could accuse a completely innocent person.Which is what he did in the end. So I think that his metheds are not valid at all they are to biased and can accuse the innocent.

  15. 2.The lies in act two were bigger than the ones in act 1. THe lies in act one were just to avoid punishment and not everyone was totally convinced on whitch craft. In the second act people where getting accused and hanged. THis might be a sign that the lies in the future are only going to be worse

  16. 1. I feel that Hales questions were not valid in uncovering the devils work because he was asking very baised qustions that seemed to me like he was just getting them top say what he wanted to hear.
2.In act 1 the truth is being hidden to protect the reverends repeutation and in act two the lies really start coming out when the girls are under pressure to get of getting caught so they lie to save them selves the lies add to theme because with out the lies the story would hav e no real meaning

  17. 2) I think the lies spoken in Act 2 were much bigger and much more harmful. The lies in Act 1 were told probably just to stay out of trouble but the lies in Act 2 were told to intentionally hurt or harm some people. The girls probably didn't mean for this to happen but once you tell one lie you usually have to tell another one to cover up your other lies. The lies add to the theme because without these lies there wouldnn't be a good story with lots of drama.

  19. 1*I think Hale's questions are not good enough because in act 1 Danforth pressures Abigail to be truthful. Abigail shivers and the other girls follow suit. They accuse Mary of bewitching them with a cold wind like in act 2.
2*Comparing Act 1 and 2 They are only lies, but why are they are asking questions if they believe in witchcraft. They think that they exist. Now they a blaming on elizabeth.

  20. 1. I think his questions were valid, because he was able to uncover the devil's work, if you consider the devil to be Abigail. He was able to uncover that Abigail was acting like this just to try to get revenge on Elizabeth and John by accusing Elizabeth to get her hanged.

    2. In Act I, everybody truly thought that there was the devil and evil spirits in Salem, but when John revealed to Hale that it was really Abigail trying to get revenge on him by getting Elizabeth hanged, Hale is able to know the truth behind all the lies. The truths will reveal all the lies in the past, which will develop the play to be more truthful.

  21. 1. Hale's method is mostly intimidation, I think that in some cases this may work, but for the most part his questions would just confuse everybody because he doesn't even listen to what you say. It's more of an arguement than questioning.

    2. There weren't many accusational lies in act 1, but in act 2 there were a lot of lies because the girls had to continue lying to keep their little 'game' going.

  22. 1. rev hale is a man who is doing what he thinks is right but the way he looks around the house and then refuses to believe goody Procter when Mary says its her doll that's just wrong
